Unit 7: Academic Relationships and Group Dynamics

Here is your blog topic for Unit #7. Responses are due Friday, December 3, 2010.It is very likely that you will have to participate in group assignments during your post-secondary education. Consider this following article on both the teacher and student perspective of group work.

What are the pros and cons of group dynamics?

Do you believe that group work better prepares you for the workforce?

What concerns do you have about doing group projects?

  1. Students split work to slash marking

The pros of group dynamics are fewer assignments for lecturers to mark, experience working in a team, and the possibility of less work for each student. The cons are freeloading group members, and higher standards of work expected. I believe that group work better prepares students for the workforce because a positive working atmosphere and great group dynamics are essential to any successful business. Group projects at school are no different, since a group that doesn’t communicate well and has in-fighting will most likely perform poorly. My concerns about doing group projects are meeting times, members who don’t pull their weight, and personal differences. Students have busy schedules with their classes, jobs, family life, etc. This may cause problems choosing meeting times that suit all of the members. From my experience with group activities, having a group where everyone does the appropriate amount of work is a rarity. On top of the workload, playing referee to arguing group members can be an arduous task that can lead to a stressful environment.
