  1. 10 Survival Tips for Mature Students
Cathy Goodwin went back to school as a mature student and offers 10 tips for survival. She recommends The Girls with the Grandmother Faces, a book written by a mature student in her sixties. She then suggests that professors will most likely be too busy for personal advice and seeking employment on campus for extra money. When frustration takes over, remembering that you can vent when the college asks for money can be a calming thought. Cathy advises reducing course loads if scheduling becomes problematic since extensions may be denied. Asking classmates for notes is essential for any missed classes and study groups can be very helpful. She believes that participating with comments and questions in the classroom is a good way to get noticed by the professor, and that having a good support system can help you succeed. Cathy’s last tip is to be wary of your stress level and to accept the marks received instead of arguing for a better mark. (Goodwin)
The article gains credibility because the author has experienced the situation herself, which makes the information believable. The tips offer some good ideas for stress management and focus heavily towards dealing with professors. Although these are helpful, she neglects the area of time management. This may be the most crucial skill needed to succeed in post-secondary school and the author could have included a tip or 2 on the subject. The article can be used to improve communications with professors but is far from the definitive guide to surviving college or university.

  3. Kickin’ it old- school: The rise of the mature student

Universities are reporting a growing number of undergraduates, mainly due to the economic downturn. Also people with jobs are returning to obtain there degree to advance their career. Many people realize, to get promoted, they will need their degree. In 2009 the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada reported a 4% increase in enrollment by people of all ages. Many Universities in the last four years are reporting large increases of mature students. Many people are returning to school for different reasons as Victoria Cameron, 40 stated she was returning because she entered the workforce young and had a family. Now, she is returning to university to become a biochemist and then to medical school. People aged 25 to 54 were returning to school mainly to find a job. Patricia Van Oostveen 49 has just enrolled in the bachelor of fine arts something she would have never done years ago. She quit her job as a financial planner and is going back to school. Her family is very supportive of her decision. She will have to make some adjustments in her life but Ms.Oostveen is confident she will achieve her goals and adapt to whatever she has to do to be successful. A study by the Canadian Council on Learning in 2002 found that the main barriers for people aged 25-64 returning to post secondary education were financial restraints, work conflicts and family responsibilities. This article portrays the thoughts that many adult students are returning to school for many different reasons. Due to the economic down turn and the competitive job market mature students are eagerly wanting to return to school. If you can conquer all the other challenges in life and go to school, it is a huge accomplishment. Definitely the economy is the major reason for the rise in mature student enrollment.
